Travelling to the UK? You will need an ETA

From April 2, Estonian citizens must present an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) when entering the United Kingdom, which can already be applied for today.

The Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) is valid for two years, provided that the passport used for travel does not expire before that period. As a reminder, Estonian citizens can enter the United Kingdom only with a passport, which must be valid for the entire duration of their stay. The ETA allows a stay in the UK for up to six months at a time..

Applying for an ETA takes approximately three days and must be completed separately for each traveller, including infants. The travel authorization, which currently costs £10, can be most easily applied for via a smartphone app or online.

At the airport, check-in staff will verify whether travelers to the UK have a valid ETA. If a passenger is unaware of the requirement or has not obtained an ETA, they will need to start the application process at the airport. To ensure a smooth start to the journey, it is highly recommended to obtain an ETA before arriving at the airport.

If you are transiting through London without leaving the transit zone, you do not need to apply for an ETA. However, if you need to exit the transit zone during your layover, the authorization is required. The airline you are flying with can best clarify whether exiting the transit zone is necessary.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs recommends registering short-term travel abroad on the Reisi Targalt website. This ensures consular protection and assistance for Estonian citizens or holders of an alien’s passport (the so-called grey passport) who are traveling as tourists or on a business trip.
