Tallinn Airport introduces licence plate recognition as paper parking tickets are phased out

From 9 November, Tallinn Airport will introduce a ticketless parking system, making parking significantly easier for passengers. Drivers will no longer need to collect a ticket when entering a car park or keep it throughout their trip. Cameras will automatically recognise vehicle registration numbers upon entry and exit, reducing the number of steps passengers need to take before and after their flights.

According to Richard Puustusmaa, Head of Mobility Services at Tallinn Airport, parking should not be a stressful part of travelling.

“With the new system, there is no need for paper tickets, and parking is registered automatically. This means passengers have fewer things to remember and more time to focus on their journey,” said Puustusmaa.

The A2 outdoor car park will be the first to switch to the new system on 9 November, followed by the multi-storey car park from 11 November. Paper parking tickets will be phased out, with parking sessions automatically recorded based on vehicle registration numbers. New payment options will also be introduced.

Parking can be paid for online via QR code, by bank card or through the Pargi.ee app

Payment options will also change with the introduction of the new system. From 9 November, passengers will be able to pay for parking online by scanning a QR code. Alternatively, they can pay at a card payment kiosk in the car park or use contactless payment at the exit without leaving their vehicle.

Mobile payments will only be available through the Pargi.ee app. To use this option, customers must activate the “Parkimine parkimismajades” (Parking in multi-storey car parks) feature in the app, after which payments will be processed automatically.

“We want passengers to have a smooth and hassle-free experience when leaving the airport. They can pay by scanning a QR code before even reaching their car, or conveniently at the exit. Our goal is simple: fewer steps, less stress and a smoother journey home,” Puustusmaa added.

Online parking reservations available from early 2027

As the next stage of the parking system upgrade, Tallinn Airport will introduce online parking reservations in early 2027.

This will allow passengers to reserve and pay for their parking space from home while planning their trip. A reservation will guarantee a space either in the multi-storey car park directly in front of the terminal or in the A2 outdoor car park, just a few minutes’ walk from the terminal.

“By booking in advance, passengers can secure a parking space for the duration of their trip, which is particularly important during periods of high demand. As parking will already have been paid for when making the reservation, the system will recognise the vehicle’s registration number on arrival and departure, and the barrier will open automatically. There will be nothing further to do on site,” said Puustusmaa.

The new parking solution at Tallinn Airport is supplied and installed by Hansab Eesti. The Entringo system has been developed and manufactured by Hansab in Estonia. It combines automatic licence plate recognition, ticketless parking and cashless payments into a single integrated service.

Parking system upgrade – Frequently asked questions

What will change from 9 November?

Tallinn Airport is introducing a new ticketless parking system. The new system will become operational in the A2 outdoor car park on 9 November and will be gradually introduced in the multi-storey car park from 11 November.

Vehicle registration numbers will be recognised automatically upon entry. Drivers will no longer need to collect a paper ticket, and parking can be paid for online via QR code, by bank card (including Google Pay and Apple Pay), or through the Pargi.ee mobile app.

Do I still need to collect a parking ticket?

No. Once the new system is in place, vehicle registration numbers will be recognised automatically, and paper parking tickets will no longer be issued.

How can I pay for parking?

There are four ways to pay for parking:

Online via QR code: Scan a QR code displayed in the parking area and pay through the online payment portal.

At the exit: Pay by contactless bank card without leaving your vehicle.

At a card payment kiosk: New payment kiosks compatible with the updated system will be installed in the arrivals area of the passenger terminal and in the A2 car park.

Through the Pargi.ee app: Pay using the app. Make sure you have activated the “Parkimine parkimismajades” (Parking in multi-storey car parks) feature beforehand.

Once the new system is operational, payments can no longer be made at the old payment machines or through the previous mobile payment service. Mobile app payments will only be available through Pargi.ee.

I entered the car park before the new system was introduced and will return after the changeover. How can I pay for parking?

Once the new system has been introduced, all parking sessions must be paid for through the new payment system, even if you received a paper ticket when entering the car park before your trip.

Do I need to keep my old parking ticket if I leave for my trip before the new system is introduced?

No. You no longer need to keep your old paper parking ticket.

How will mobile payments change?

You can pay for parking using the Pargi.ee app, provided that the “Parkimine parkimismajades” (Parking in multi-storey car parks) feature has been activated.

Please note that an additional mobile operator service fee applies when using this payment method.

Can I pay for parking without leaving my car?

Yes. You can pay by contactless bank card directly at the exit without leaving your vehicle.

Alternatively, you can pay before reaching your car by scanning a QR code displayed in the parking area and completing the payment online.

Can I pay for parking in cash?

No. Cash payments are not accepted for parking. Tallinn Airport’s services have been cashless since 1 February 2026.

Can I reserve a parking space before my trip?

Online parking reservations will become available in early 2027. In addition to reserving a parking space, passengers will also be able to pay for parking in advance.

Upon entering and leaving the car park, the system will automatically recognise the vehicle’s registration number and open the barriers.

What should I do if licence plate recognition does not work?

If the system cannot recognise your vehicle’s registration number, step-by-step instructions will appear on the screen explaining how to start a parking session using an automated phone call.

In this case, the parking payment will later be linked to your phone number rather than your vehicle’s registration number.

What should I do if I have trouble paying or exiting the car park?

If you experience difficulties when leaving the car park, please contact customer support. Contact numbers are displayed on the payment kiosks.

You can also ask for assistance at the airport information desk.

Will there be any disruptions during the transition period?

Short-term disruptions and changes to traffic arrangements may occur in the airport car parks during the transition period. Please follow the signs and instructions displayed on site.
