Funchal is the most important city in Madeira, located on the coast between the mountains, and is a convenient base for day trips. Madeira’s nature is wonderful and the main way to explore it is by hiking. There are over 3,000 km of hiking trails and everyone can find a trail with a suitable load. Madeira is an island, but it is certainly not a classic beach holiday destination. There are plenty of beaches, but don’t expect golden sand. Madeira also has natural saltwater pools for exciting swimming and sunbathing.
