Airspace Closure Will Not Halt Tartu–Helsinki Flights

Estonia’s decision to partially close its airspace led to changes at Tartu Airport yesterday. The evening Helsinki–Tartu flight and the early-morning Tartu–Helsinki departure were cancelled because of the unexpected closure.

Estonian Air Navigation Services (EANS), working with other partners, found a solution that allows the Tartu–Helsinki route to continue. Today’s daytime flight operated as scheduled, and this evening’s Helsinki–Tartu flight is also on track, even during the period when the airspace remains closed overnight.

“Input from the Air Force helped EANS review the restricted area so that regular flights to and from Tartu can continue. Based on that, we worked with partners to free part of the restricted zone during Tartu Airport’s scheduled flights. This ensures smooth operations and uninterrupted flight information services during those times,” said Mihkel Haug, Head of Air Traffic Management at EANS.

“The Tartu–Helsinki route is vital for the region’s connectivity, and we’re pleased that a way has been found to keep flights running safely even in a challenging situation,” added Eero Pärgmäe, a member of the Management Board of Tallinn Airport.

Tartu Airport will continue close cooperation with Finnair and EANS to ensure passengers receive the smoothest and safest service possible.
